I ride in honor of all the women in my life who have endured the challenges of cancer and have been a great inspiration, I will be participating in Wheel to Survive, a 6 hour indoor cycling event, to raise money to help The Clearity Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) organization that supports women battling ovarian cancer today by providing personalized information to individualize treatment decisions.
I will be participating in Wheel to Survive San Francisco Bay Area, an inspirational four hour indoor cycling event to raise money to help women batting ovarian cancer today and to provide research dollars for a cure. 100% of the money I raise will go to fund these programs.
My first job as a Cancer Research Scientist was at a Biotechnology Company in the bay area called SUGEN. To this day this was one of my favorite jobs. This was an exciting time in the field of Cancer Research and SUGEN had a number of great people, many of whom I still keep up with today. One of my co-workers (and former President of SUGEN) was a Scientist named Laura Shawver. Laura is an amazing person as both a Cancer Researcher and an Ovarian Cancer survivor. When Laura was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer she realized that there was a large gap in the understanding of how women with ovarian cancer get treated and their molecular diagnosis. She realized that all ovarian cancer patients were being treated in a “one-size-fits-all” manner and decided to change that.
Laura founded the Clearity Foundation. By providing tumor blueprints to patients, The Clearity Foundation is bringing the future of cancer treatments to women who need help today. When one of my neighbors was diagnosed with ovarian cancer Laura was extremely kind in reaching out to her and making sure that she was tested to determine her molecular blueprint. Unfortunately my neighbor passed away from ovarian cancer but the information that was gleaned from her molecular diagnosis/treatment will help many current and future ovarian cancer patients.
Please help me Be the Difference in the fight against ovarian cancer by making a donation today. Ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynecological cancer affecting 1 in 70 women. Today more than 70% of ovarian cancer patients will die of their disease, compared to less than 20% of breast cancer patients. When ovarian cancer is detected and treated early, the five year survival rate is greater than 92%. Sadly though, symptoms are vague and subtle, so most patients are diagnosed at later stages and less than 50% will survive longer than 5 years after their diagnosis.
The work that is being supported by the Clearity Foundation is truly transformational to the field of ovarian cancer Research and (in my opinion as a Cancer Research Scientist) is extremely important!
I truly appreciate any support you can provide. It will benefit a great cause. You can also help me reach my goal by sharing this page on Facebook and Twitter. Or, send an e-mail to friends you think might be interested in contributing and include a link to my page. Sign up and ride with me.
